Sid McCray, Original Bad Brains Vocalist, Has Died

Sidney McCray, the original lead singer of Bad Brains, has passed away. McCray died on Wednesday, 9th September, with the news confirmed on the band’s official Facebook page over the weekend. No cause of death has been given.

McCray was a founding member of the legendary hardcore punk outfit, from their formation in 1977 until he left the band a year later, with then-guitarist H.R. stepping in as lead vocalist.

Though his time as a member of Bad Brains was brief, he had a significant impact on the band’s sound, introducing its members to punk rock acts such as The Dead Boys and Sex Pistols, and helping write early songs such as ‘The Regulator’.

Though he left the band early on, McCray stayed in contact with its members throughout the years and occasionally performed with them, such as during a surprise show back in 2017. Watch that below.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover costs related to McCray’s funeral. “He is remembered and loved by seven children, family, friends, his former band members and a host of loyal fans,” reads the GoFundMe description.

“Sidney’s children would like to have a Memorial Service for their father and are gratefully in acceptance of donations. Contributions will solely go towards the Last Honors for SidMac. We Thank You in advance for your Condolences, Love and Prayers.”
